the discussion. >> we have got to sit down. i ask all my friends in the nra and i'm a proud nra member and always have been, we need to sit down and move this dialogue to a reasonable approach to fixing it. everything has to be on the table and i think it will be. >> in the west, a lot of gun show customers have newtown on their minds and they have their own ideas as to how the shootings could have been prevented. here is cnn's casey wian. >> clm byolumbine, virginia tec sikh temple in wisconsin, an oregon shopping mall, even with the mass shootings it has become easier for most americans to carry a gun, own an assault rifle or use high capacity magazines. but in the aftermath of connecticut, voices, most notably from a tearful president obama, are calling for tighter gun control. you won't hear them at a california gun show held the day after the connecticut massacre. >> everybody is in a panic. i've never seen so many people at a gun show. i think they're worried about their second amendment rights. >> reporter: there is sympathy for the victims. >> it is horrible that those children did die. >
america, full disclosure. i am a handgun bonee owner and member of the nra. i'll do my best to stay in the middle on this one. alan, what did you think about what costas had to say there. >> you're not packing on the set there. >> no, jenna gets angry with me what i do that. the city of new york wouldn't allow it. >> he was quoting somebody else, obviously, i don't get the sense that he was calling for specific legislation, or saying here is what we should do. he wasn't specifically calling for gun control. he was saying some things that are true, we have a gun culture, and two, we could debate whether or not if jovan had a gun would he and his girlfriend be ali today? i think had he said there is a better chance that he would be -- or better than even chance he'd be alive today if they don't have a gun that might have been a better way to express it. he wasn't calling for specific legislation. i think it's interesting how conservatives have decided to jump on him immediately after that statement, which he had to address it and say something. jon: what i find interesting, jim is tha
think garland is right. it does play into the fear factor. what the left is forgetting, the nra has a higher approval rating than both president and congress. i think this is going to be backfire them. i think a lot of people are very upset and people think it's really wrong, but if we have to make a law to prevent people from doing things like this and using public information of people that are not done anything wrong and exercising their rights and use that information trying to harm them, maybe we do have to do that. >> arthel: they are saying that the damage has been done, it's too late you can't take it back there. the information is out there. what do you think the neighbors will respond? if there is a possibility of is on tra sizing those people that are legally holding guns? >> i don't think it's going to be make a difference. i don't think people are going to search through 10,000 names. apparently they have 20,000 or 30,000 names. i don't think people are going to take the time to look. it's an exercise in futility. we've got our feud going on. what next? do we have a con
between the two extremes that exist in the country. one is the nra that believe if you can see lightning and hear thunder, you should own a gun and then the extreme left liberals that think we're just going to wave the magic wand and erase 300 million firearms that we have knowledge of today. you need to sit down in the middle. >> not going to happen. >> you're right. that's unfortunately the truth here. that's why in a sense we're spinning our wheels. there is a remedy to the problem. part of it revolves around our ability to properly vet people and continuous education with people and law enforcement, we are taught and it's impressed upon us the need to safeguard your weapons. the rest of america is on a whole another page. we're on one page, they're on another. we go through one vetting process, they go through basically none. this is the disconnect. >> lou? we're going to have to leave it there. i appreciate the conversation. and i know how you're feeling because i've met your kids. and i've met your wife and i'm sure you ugh hadded them a lot yesterday as well you should and lou pal
them. >> reporter: laperriere says the nra hired former republican congressman asa hutchinson to develop a more in depth security plan for schools. hutchison, a also former deputy director of the department of homeland security, compares this debate to the debate over armed federal air marshals. >> it increased safety of airlines. it is not like it is an armed camp when you go on airlines. it is very discrete use of armed guards that has a presence there to protect america. our children less important to protect than our air transportation? i don't think so. >> reporter: but the reaction on capitol hill has been less than enthusiastic it especially from democrats. california democratic senator dianne feinstein calls it, a quote, delay tactic. others suggested that laperriere's plan might have the opposite effect on lawmakers. >> well i think he is so extreme and so tone deaf that he actually helps the cause of us passing sensible gun legislation in the congress. >> we have 10,000 elementary and secondary schools in this country. if you had two officers in each that would cost
